I am the artist known to thousands of children and their families as The Face Paint Lady. My name is Michelle Johnson and I love my job! I was introduced to theatrical make up in October 1988 when employed at Kinetic Artistry in Takoma Park, Maryland. There I learned face painting from makeup artist Roger Riggle. I order my Kryolan makeup from Roger to this very day. At the same time I was working at Darrow Berry Farm when my late friend Ellen suggested I bring my paints there.
That was 1991, I have been face painting the public ever since. Ellen was the one who gave me my first pair of wild colorful tights. I still have those very same tights and as TFPL I’ve been wearing bright tights ever since. Coupled with surf shorts and my logo t-shirt, I am immediately recognized as a bringer of fun. From 1996 to 2002 I painted over 500 games for the Bowie Baysox. This was when the team was new to our town and I was painting for consistent crowds of up to 14,000. 7 seasons of performing at every home game introduced me to my entire community, and this public interaction cemented my position as the most recognizable local face painter.
I also enjoyed painting for 7 years at 2 local Chick-Fil-A’s and since 2013 I have painted every Tuesday night at the Bowie Texas Roadhouse. In between these regular appearances, I have performed at thousands of birthday parties, city events, corporate functions, museums and career days. My 2 children are now 23 and 19, I have enjoyed painting them and their friends. Being a self-employed artist has allowed me to be a stay at home mom and my fabulous home studio has been the perfecr place to build school projects, yard decorations, and great costumes.
As I close my first 25 years of face painting, I am invigorated and excited for what the next 25 years hold for my art company. It is a lot of fun to have a company that allows me to write on everything; including people.
I hope you find what is fun for you too!
